A few days before their trip, Rime contacted me looking for a last-minute family photoshoot in Paris. She didn't tell me much over the phone. I simply knew she wanted to create beautiful family memories during her parents' visit. At first, she suggested Montmartre, one of the most iconic neighbourhoods in Paris. Instead, I recommended the Jardin des Tuileries. With its elegant fountains, tree-lined paths, Parisian green chairs, sculptures and breathtaking views stretching from the Louvre to Place de la Concorde, it's one of my favourite locations for family photography in Paris. It offers plenty of beautiful backdrops while remaining peaceful and easy to explore at a relaxed pace. She immediately loved the idea.

Meeting Three Beautiful Souls

We met early in the morning at the Concorde entrance of the gardens. After introducing herself, Rime walked me towards an elderly couple waiting quietly near one of the fountains. "They're my parents," she smiled. It immediately became clear that this photo session wasn't simply another family portrait. It was a gift. A gift of memories. A gift of time spent together. And then I noticed her beautiful baby bump. Ana was six months pregnant—and expecting twins.

Some of the most beautiful photographs are created on the mornings when everything seems to be working against you. It was just after 8:00 AM on a freezing December morning in Paris. The streets were still dark, the sky completely grey and a thick winter mist covered the city. The temperature had dropped below freezing overnight, making it one of those mornings when staying under a warm duvet feels far more appealing than stepping outside. My alarm had already rung several times. Like many people, I pressed the snooze button more than once, trying to convince myself that five more minutes would somehow make waking up easier. Eventually, reality won. A hot shower. A warm coat. A quick breakfast.
One large cup of coffee. And then, off to the Paris Metro.

Why Sunrise Is Worth It

The metro was already crowded with commuters beginning another working day. As I stood there surrounded by hundreds of sleepy Parisians, I couldn't help smiling to myself. I became self-employed to have more freedom... and here I am, travelling during rush hour just like everyone else."

Back home, I carefully began editing the gallery. Very quickly, something became obvious. These photographs weren't meant to be colourful.
They belonged in black and white. Without colour, every image became stronger. More elegant. More emotional. The mist added a dreamlike quality that reminded me of classic photographs of Paris from the 1920s and 1930s. Looking through the gallery, I couldn't help thinking of the timeless work of Robert Doisneau, whose poetic black-and-white photographs captured the romance and authenticity of Paris so beautifully.
Sometimes the weather writes part of the story. This was one of those days.

The following day, I delivered Maria and Andrew's gallery. A few moments later, my phone vibrated. Their message was wonderfully simple.

We started the session inside the charming Bistro Vivienne, tucked away within the gallery. The warm interior, vintage furniture and intimate atmosphere immediately created the feeling of an old Parisian film. Although the light was relatively low, it added depth and character to the portraits. Freya first wore a casual outfit before changing into her yoga clothing, allowing us to create two completely different visual stories within the same location. Some mornings don't begin exactly as planned. The alarm rings, the weather isn't particularly inspiring and the temptation to stay under a warm blanket is stronger than usual. As a photographer, there are days when motivation comes easily—and others when it takes a little more effort to leave home. That morning was one of those. Fortunately, unlike my usual sunrise sessions, this photoshoot wasn't scheduled until 11:00 AM. I enjoyed a slower morning before making my way across Paris to meet Amanda and Andrew for their couple photoshoot at the Eiffel Tower.

Everything seemed perfectly under control... until the Paris Metro decided otherwise. A delayed train quickly turned into an unexpected sprint through the streets of Paris. Despite leaving with plenty of time, I arrived a few minutes late—something I almost never allow to happen. I immediately apologised, hoping my clients hadn't been waiting too long. Fortunately, Amanda and Andrew greeted me with warm smiles.
That set the tone for the rest of the morning.
